Franklin Park Episcopal church seeking help outside diocese

[post-gazette.com] February 10, 2005--In the end, the members of St. Brendan Episcopal Church in Franklin Park wearied of war.

Seeking refuge from the battles that for years have threatened to breach the theological bulwarks of Episcopal Church USA, the 225-member parish last week became the first in the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh to request that a bishop other than its own provide pastoral oversight.

While not a ground-breaking request -- a Rhode Island parish has had alternative episcopal oversight since 1996 and a former archbishop of Canterbury provided oversight for numerous parishes in the Diocese of Virginia last fall -- it is believed to be the first time a liberal parish has made such a request of a conservative bishop.
