[LifeSite.com] June 3, 2005-- As Canada’s Liberal Government is trying to rush Bill C-38 through Parliament prior to the July summer recess, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has publicized its brief presented on 18 May 2005 to the Special Legislative Committee on Bill C-38.

Addressed to the Members of the Senate and the House of Commons the communiqué expresses the collective concern of Roman and Eastern Catholic Bishops regarding the impact Bill C-38 will have on Canadians “both in terms of altering the significance of marriage and also in terms of the challenges that are already being posed to the basic freedoms of conscience and religion, as well as to freedom of expression.”

One of the main concerns expressed by the Catholic organization is that under the new legislation “marriage as the most basic of all social institutions becomes meaningless”.
