Lutherans tackle issue of sexuality, gay clergy

[The Plain Dealer] August 8, 2005--The Episcopal Church created a firestorm in 2003 when it approved the election of an openly gay bishop. Last month, the Cleveland-based United Church of Christ became the largest Christian denomination to endorse same-sex marriages.

Now, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is trying to boldly go farther than any mainline Protestant denomination has gone - to allow sexually active gay and lesbian clergy while simultaneously upholding traditional church teaching that marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman
