[The Church of England Newspaper] February 10, 2006--Church leaders attempted to calm continuing Muslim protests, some of them increasingly violent, over the Danish cartoons, as agencies reported that Christian minorities in Muslim countries faced persecution as a result of the controversy. The Archbishop of Canterbury, in his first words about the row, which some have claimed is a ‘clash of civilisations’, said that while the West liked to think it was inviting other cultures into a peaceful and enlightened civility, the ‘strangers’ were dismayed at some of the “unpeaceful and unenlightened attitudes to minorities”.
