[Sydney Morning Herald] March 13, 2006--The rise of Islam has become the world's great cultural fault line. Professor Philip Jenkins, who charted this emergence sooner than most, wrote in The Next Christendom (2002): "At the turning of the third millenium, religious loyalties are at the root of many of the world's ongoing civil wars and political violence, and in most cases, the critical division is the age-old battle between Christianity and Islam. However much this would have surprised political analysts a generation ago, the critical political frontiers around the world are not decided by attitudes towards class or dialectical materialism, but by rival concepts of God."
