[The Charleston Post and Courier] 7 May 2007--Firming up his influence in the United States, Archbishop Peter J. Akinola of the Anglican Church of Nigeria took the unusual step of traveling to Virginia on Saturday to install a bishop of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA), a missionary arm of his church in the U.S.

He did so despite written pleas by Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori and Anglican Archibishop Rowan Williams to cancel the trip, saying it undermined the long-standing Anglican tradition of provincial autonomy.

The Rev. Martyn Minns, former rector of the breakaway Truro Parish in Fairfax, Va., was installed as bishop of CANA on Saturday.

The installation comes at a time when those in the U.S. who feel marginalized by what they call the liberalization of the 2.3 million-member Episcopal Church are facing increased uncertainty about how a strategy to disassociate from the church will play out.
