Dr. Stephen Noll: Look Not to Cantuar

[Stand Firm] 9 June 2007--When Dr. Stephen Noll first published this essay in February 2006, I disagreed rather vehemently. At the time I still believed that the Archbishop of Canterbury was determined to uphold Communion decisions and agreements. I was wrong.

Since then I have been persuaded, both by argument and by experience, that even if this were true--even if the current Archbishop held to such a commitment--it is folly to found the fate of the Anglican Communion on Conference invitations issued by one man. As currently ordered, the Archbishop of Canterbury has the sole right to determine who is "in" and who is "out" of the Anglican Communion. Primatial decisions hold no coercive or institutional weight.
