Misconceptions, misnomers and what the hell?!: What Laidlaw and Perry don’t understand

[Lambeth Conference.net] 3 Mar 2008--Now that we’ve all had a few days to cool off and reflect on the court ruling of Friday past, perhaps we can put some of the vitriol, anxiety and anger behind us for a moment and try to understand what actually has happened.

Writing in the Toronto Star, this Saturday, God-beat journalist Stuart Laidlaw has – once more – gotten it wrong. Almost completely.

His full article, “At core of Anglican conflict, a 1900-year-old tradition” spells out for the reader a theology of the episcopate that is at once catholic and Anglican. Even our own Alan Perry, no longer clad with his trademark John Lennon sunglasses, seems to understand what Ignatius wrote – for the most part. The problem is that neither Laidlaw nor Perry have interpreted Ignatius, or Scripture itself, in the light of catholic tradition.
