[Telegraph] 13 Jul 2008--Archbishop Desmond Tutu has warned Anglican leaders not to abandon the church's tradition of tolerance ahead of a critical conference which is set to be dominated by divisions over homosexuality and women bishops.

The 76-year-old former Archbishop of Cape Town, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his opposition to apartheid in South Africa, said he was greatly saddened by the disputes between liberals and traditionalists which are pushing the worldwide Communion to the brink of schism.

His call for unity came as the openly gay clergyman whose ordination triggered the crisis over sexuality gave a sermon in a London church, and claimed it was a "mistake" for the Archbishop of Canterbury not to invite him to the once-a-decade gathering of Anglican bishops, the Lambeth Conference, which begins this week.

Speaking to Sky News, Archbishop Tutu said he was against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and added: "The Anglican Church prides itself, and this is one of its greatest attributes, it prides itself on being the church that is comprehensive - comprehensive meaning that it is a church that includes all kinds of points of view.
