The coming Anglican split?

[The Dallas Morning News] 17 Jul 2008--The Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Communion has gotten underway in Canterbury at what is undoubtedly the most perilous time in the worldwide church's history. The Anglicans have never been closer to shattering their communion than they are now, and it all comes down to two related concepts: sex and Scripture.

Put simply, the Anglican communion, some 70 million strong, is on the verge of breaking up because its members cannot agree on the authority of Scripture over sexual morality, in particular homosexuality. The conservatives have the numbers (chiefly in Africa, where Anglicanism is booming, even as it withers in England and the US), but the liberals have the money and the institutional influence. The intra-church fight has touched the Episcopal community in Dallas in a big way.
