APA Bishop seeks to transfer his jurisdiction to the Reformed Episcopal Church

[Stand Firm] 9 Sep 2008--The Bishop Ordinary of the Anglican Province in America(APA) Diocese of the West has moved from the APA to the Reformed Episcopal Church. It is at this point unknown how many, priests within his former jurisdiction will follow. Apparently, the bishop's move was prompted by his desire to remain within the Common Cause Partnership.

Bishop Boyce's letter (linked above) indicates that he intends to retain his jurisdictional authority. He states:

We have requested that the REC receive the DOW into that intercommunion we have shared for these many years that we might work as one to bring the Gospel to all who are in need. Since the APA and REC remain in Communion with each other, we will continue to be in Communion with our brothers and sisters in the APA. We will keep you informed as we move ahead.

The correspondence between Bishop Boyce and APA Presiding Bishop Grundorf suggest that the two bishops have quite different understandings of the APA Constitution and Canons and the authority of the Presiding Bishop in the APA. Grundorf by his actions and statements appears to view that office as that of an Archbishop or Primate. Boyce's view of the office conforms more closely to that set forth in the APA Constitution and Canons. Grundorf's response to Boyce's withdrawal of the American Diocese of the West from APA is strikingly similar to that of TEC Presiding Bishop Jeffert Shori's response to the realignment of the Diocese of San Joquin with the Province of the Southern Cone.
