Congressional agenda

[OneNewsNow] 6 Nov 2008--Now that the election is behind us, members of Congress are already looking ahead to what may be the agenda for Congress in January. Many would like to pass the Freedom of Choice act that would effectively nullify hundreds of state laws that limit abortion in some way (24-hour waiting period, ban third-trimester abortion, parental consent). It is likely that this bill will be pushed forward.

Another piece of legislation that nearly passed the Senate years ago is the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). If this bill is signed into law, it would place "sexual orientation" into a category similar to race, gender, and age. Many believe that it would force schools, hospitals, clinics, various non-profit groups, and small business to hire homosexuals. Although there may be an exemption for churches, it is likely that even that exemption will be dropped later on.

Another bill that has been debated in the past and likely to be put forward once again is hate crimes legislation. Christian leaders believe that pastors and broadcasters might risk committing a federal crime for expressing the biblical view on homosexuality. Although these bills are put forward as civil rights issues, they essentially outlaw speech and even turn the police and bureaucrats into thought police.
