GAY MARRIAGE: Support for marriage remains steadfast

[OneNewsNow] 7 Nov 2008--A researcher at a top conservative think tank in Washington says although the election of Barack Obama as president may signal a further left-ward political drift in the U.S., the success of ballot initiatives on Tuesday banning same-sex "marriage" indicates there is still widespread support for traditional marriage.

With the passage of marriage amendments in California, Arizona, and Florida, 30 states have now amended their constitutions to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Forty states have a Defense of Marriage Acts. The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), of course, passed in 1996 by overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate, and was signed into law by President Clinton. However, president-elect Barack Obama has made it clear he wants to overturn DOMA.

Tom Messner, a visiting researcher at the Heritage Foundation, says attempts to repeal DOMA and legalize same-sex "marriage" threaten religious liberty.
