Church plans near Winfield upset neighbors

[Chicago Tribune] 6 Feb 2009--Jean Range and her husband, James Donnelly, spied the open spaces and mature trees along Purnell Road near Winfield and decided it was where they wanted to make their home. The congregation of the Church of the Resurrection in Glen Ellyn had a similar experience when it found a 21-acre parcel near Purnell and Indian Knoll Roads.

Now the two landowners are on opposing sides of a fervor playing out before the DuPage County Board.

The Church of the Resurrection is seeking county permission to build a sanctuary that seats 1,500 and has an 85-foot bell tower with a carillon, among other buildings. The board is scheduled to consider the church's request Tuesday.

Range, who with her husband hopes to build a home in the area, and dozens of nearby residents have come to recent County Board meetings to speak against the church's plan.
