[The Living Church] 6 July 2006--The election of an Episcopal priest as a missionary bishop to the United States by the Anglican Church of Nigeria appears to be in violation of a Nigerian canon which stipulates that eligible persons to the episcopate must belong either to the Church of Nigeria or a diocese in communion with it. The Church of Nigeria broke communion with The Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Virginia after the Rev. Canon V. Gene Robinson was consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of New Hampshire in 2003. In other news from Nigeria, a statement attributed to the Nigerian House of Bishops described The Episcopal Church as a “cancerous lump” and urged its removal from the body in order to avoid the “death of the patient.”
