[Anglican Mainstream] 13 Dec 2007--The following excerpt describes a recent media encounter of Alan Chambers (Exodus International). It is consonant with the recurring pattern which Stephen Noll discerned a decade ago or so and described in The Handwriting on the Wall, 1998. For Stephen, ‘The basis for the new sexual ethic is not diversity, or tolerance during a process of dialogue, but justice, as defined by contemporary North American liberationism … Revisionists read the Bible and the baptismal vow “to strive for justice and peace among all people” … in such a way as to make acceptance of their position morally binding on all’ (p. 5).
Many of us have thought that all stories were of equal worth, that ‘listening’ and ‘acceptance’ was what this was all about — but in fact, we have been gullible and blind. ‘Listening’ performed a vital role at the beginning. And it has been right to listen to people’s stories - but all stories, not just PC ones! However, in terms of the dominant ideological trajectory, this phenomenon does not end in yet more ‘Listening’ - where there is flexibility, debate and permanent disagreement - but rather, in a ‘progressive’ socio-political Justice, clear-cut, black-and-white, non-negotable, where few dare dispute the Party Line. Spend some time ‘listening’ to TEC if in doubt: if nothing else, Katie and her gang are exploring uncharted waters openly and confidently - the future is theirs, after all, or so they keep saying. But let us at least be honest: This is not all about ‘Listening’ - it is all about ‘Justice’.
