Church unveils Namugongo shrine project

The Church of Uganda needs sh375m for the construction of a pavilion at the Uganda Martyrs’ shrine in Namugongo.

A campaign to raise funds for the project was launched on Friday during prayers to commemorate the Uganda martyrs killed by Mwanga II, the Kabaka of Buganda, between 1885 and 1887.

The Uganda Martyrs were Christian converts who were murdered for their faith. Twenty five of them were burnt alive at Nakiyanja, where the Anglican shrines stand. Similar prayers were held at the nearby Catholic Shrine, where Charles Lwanga, the leader of martyrs was killed.

The service was led by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, His Grace Luke Orombi. He was assisted by the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Luwalira.
