Nigerian General Synod Forms New Anglican Diocese in North America


Missionary Diocese of the Trinity(MDT) will embrace Churches in North America and Canada

At the just concluded 10th Session of the General Synod of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) held from 19th to 25th September 2011 at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Cathedral Church, Ikeja Lagos, Nigeria, with the theme "Restoring the years the Locust had eaten (Joel 2:25-27); the church of Nigeria approved the creation of The Missionary Diocese of the Trinity (MDT).

Missionary Diocese of the Trinity(MDT) will be a cluster of Churches in the U.S. and Canada, and an offshoot of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion an affiliate of Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) and Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA).

The MDT shall be an evangelical and church planting mission that also joins Confessing Anglican movements to sustain the sanctity of Anglicanism and its rich heritage, as well as the apostolic teaching and practice, and the faith as handed over to us by the Apostles. The Rt. Rev Amos Fagbamiye the former Suffragan Bishop of CANA is saddled with the leadership of the new diocese and acknowledged as the first substantive Bishop.

The General Synod is the highest decision making body of the Anglican Church of Nigeria where the decisions of the Standing Committee are ratified and policy thrusts for the advancement of the Gospel are made. The General Synod holds every three years.

The Synod comprises the Primate, who presides, Archbishops, Bishops, and about 1,500 delegates representing the Chancellors/Registrars of all Dioceses, elected representatives of the houses of laity and clergy and women from the 162 Dioceses from all parts of the Country.

The date for the formal inauguration of the new diocese will be given later by the Primate of All Nigeria

As part of the preparation for the inauguration of the new diocese, delegates for the new diocese and members of the formation committee will meet at Emmanuel Anglican Church, Raleigh, North Carolina from October 13 - 16, 2011 to firm up arrangement for the effective take off of the diocese.
