U.N. chief fears N. Korea on 'collision course'


The move follows increased U.S. reaction to the threats, including the deployment of two F-22 fighter jets to South Korea.

North Korea announced Tuesday that it will restart all mothballed facilities at its main Nyongbyon nuclear complex, adding to growing tensions amid weeks of increased warlike rhetoric from the country.

The nuclear facility was shut down in 2007 as part of an international nuclear disarmament deal. The facility, which will be restarted "without delay," will increase the country's nuclear forces "in quality and quantity," according to a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon responded that North Korea appears to be "on a collision course with the international community." Speaking in Andorra, the former South Korean foreign minister said "the current crisis has already gone too far" and international negotiations are urgently needed.

Despite the escalating tensions, Ban said he is "convinced that no one intends to attack" North Korea. Read more
