No longer talking


Have you noticed that people are no longer talking? Sure, there is plenty of chat in shops and restaurants, but how often do you phone someone? If you’re over 40 you probably haven’t changed your habits, but I suspect that if you are under 40 there has been a change.

I have noticed that the students who gather in the classroom before my Japanese language class are far less likely to talk to each other than they are to look at their cell phones. Many of them know each other from outside of the class. Their chief means of communicating with each other is to text each other. I am the oldest person in the class and I would rather talk with one of my classmates than look at my cellphone.
