Scammers will hack the email account of a church leader and then send emails claiming that due to an unexpected emergency the church leader need financial help. Those on the church leader's contact list are asked to send the church leader money or to purchase a gift card for the church leader. Those who are acquainted with the church leader know that he or she would not solicit funds in this manner but scammers operate on the principle that they may catch someone off guard. I have personally been the target of this type of scam on several occasions.
