All Hallows Evening Prayer for Wednesday Evening (September 14, 2022) Is Now Online

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

A fingerpost is a traditional type of signpost chiefly used in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Finger posts are also called guideposts. A fingerpost consisting of a post with one or more arms, known as fingers, pointing to the lanes or roads leading to the places named on the fingers. Fingerposts have been a part of the English countryside since the seventeenth century.

A fingerpost was a welcome sight to a small boy who loved to ride around the Suffolk countryside on his bicycle and visit the many churches for which Suffolk earned the name “Seely Suffolk,” or Holy Suffolk, in Medieval times. Suffolk would also be called “Our Lady’s Dowry” because of its many churches. One finger would point to the lane leading back to the village where I lived or to a nearby village from which I could find my way home.

The Scripture reading for this Wednesday is Colossians 3: 12-16 The expression of the new life.

The homily is titled “A Fingerpost for Pilgrims.”
