All Hallows Evening Prayer for Wednesday Evening (September 15, 2021)

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

We take light for granted. Most of us have not experienced total darkness—the total absence of light. At night there is usually some form of light—the moon, a streetlight, the lights of a house, the skyglow of a town. Even if we drive out in the countryside far from any house or town on a moonless night, there is still the glimmer of the stars.

In the New Testament light is associated with good and darkness, the absence of light—with evil.

Imagine what our world would be like if there was no light in it, no good in it, only darkness, only evil. It would be a far worse place than it is now.

God in merciful kindness causes light to shine in the darkness of our world. One of the ways that God fills the darkness with light is through those whom he has called to be his people, called to be lights in our dark world.

The Scripture reading for this Wednesday evening is Colossians 3: 12-21 The Expression of the New Life.

The homily is titled “A People of the Light.”
