[The Church of England Newspaper] March 3, 2006--Echoes of empire and imperialism have prevented the Church from hearing clearly what each side has been saying in the debates over human sexuality, Archbishop Rowan Williams told Anglican delegates to the World Council of Churches on February 17. Dr Williams argued: “The Anglican Communion is worth working for” and urged the warring factions to hold together in continued dialogue, seeking God’s will for the Church. “There is a perception that Western elites rule, manipulate, determine the agenda” for the rest of the world, Dr Williams said. While the Churches of the Global South have sought to “affirm their integrity, their intellectual and spiritual maturity” in the debates over human sexuality, the “background noise” to the conversation had become those of “empire” and of “global US policy”.
