Thursday's Catch: "Why the ‘Active Decline’ in US Church Attendance Is ‘Urgent,’ but Not Without Hope" And More

“We are currently in the largest and fastest religious shift in the history of our country,” said Jim Davis, speaking last week with his colleague, Michael Graham, on “The Stetzer ChurchLeaders Podcast.” A study Davis and Graham commissioned has found that 40 million adult Americans, 15 million of whom are evangelicals, are no longer attending church, a situation the two describe as “bleak.”

Church attendance still below pre-pandemic levels despite slight uptick, new data shows
Religious worship service attendance in the United States is still below pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels despite a slight increase in the last two years, with a slightly steeper decline among Catholics than Protestants, survey data suggests.

The Episcopal Church Must Be Made Stronger in the Hinterland
Chip Preh may have said more than he realized when he described how he destroyed fire ant mounds. All the work a colony of fire ants put into the construction of a mound destroyed by someone who does not welcome their presence. Isn't that to some degree what has happened in the Episcopal Church?
The Episcopal Church has had many opportunities to not only strengthen existing churches but also to plant new churches. It has failed to take advantage of these opportunities. The last decade of the twentieth century was declared "a decade of evangelism." Numerous Episcopal clergy announced, "This is the Episcopal Church. We don't do evangelism!"

In the first decade of the twenty-first century my bishop launched a new church planting initiative in the diocese. It met for a large part with indifference and disinterest from the diocese's clergy. In my own deanery one church asked the bishop not to plant any new churches in the deanery although the deanery had a rapidly growing population and could have supported two or more new works.

The bishop initially complied with this request but later changed his mind when the Anglican Mission in America announced that it was planting a new church in the deanery. The new work was supplied by clergy from the bishop's old deanery because the clergy of the deanery refused to have anything to do with the church plant.

The events of 2003 would effectively kill that work and a second new work in the bishop's old deanery. Chip Preh may have indeed said more than he realized!

Wednesday's Catch: 'Pentecostals: How Do They Keep Growing While Other Groups Are Declining?' And More

Pentecostals: How Do They Keep Growing While Other Groups Are Declining?
Some denominations, such as the United Church of Christ and The Presbyterian Church (USA) have experienced steady decline, waning by 52% and 58% respectively. For others, such as the Southern Baptist Convention and the United Methodist Church, the rate of decline has accelerated in recent years. But throughout the last several decades of falling membership numbers among Protestants, one consistent outlier has bucked the trend: Pentecostals. Why aren’t Pentecostals following the same pattern of other denominations?

Why Your Congregation Is Likely More Optimistic about the Future Than You Realize
"Over 80% of churchgoers predict a promising future for their churches. Is this figure what you would expect? Until I saw the research, I would not have guessed optimism was so high among churchgoers," Sam Raier writes.

How Christians Can Help Heal Cuts From a Broken Society
Many live with this perspective on society: The world around me is broken, the deck is stacked against me, and nobody powerful is on my side.
Psychologists and sociologists who have researched this particular mindset in which individuals see themselves as helpless victims who have no control over their lives have found that it is not necessarily based in reality but rather in how individuals with this mindset perceive reality. They display a strong tendency to blame others for their circumstances and to discount their own contribution to these circumstances. In helping these individuals, it is important to be aware of this tendency.
Is This Church Ready for Rebuilding?
When Rebekah Simon-Peter talks about "embracing society," she is talking about connecting with the community. I have seen churches that have negligible connection with the community in which they are located go into steep decline and eventually disband because they were no longer viable. They had isolated themselves so well from the community that very few, if any, people in the community knew that the church existed. They were practically invisible to the community.

Southern Baptists say no to women pastors. But what does the Bible say a pastor is?
The expulsion of Saddleback Church and other congregations for having women pastors led to national headlines. It’s also prompted questions about thousands of other churches where women serve in roles such as children’s pastor or music minister. Can the role’s title get a church in trouble with the SBC?

Most believers want to grow spiritually. But often we stumble in our efforts to grow. Is there a key or a silver bullet that catalyzes our spiritual formation? The great leader Nehemiah shows us 8 ways to engage with God’s Word for maximum impact.

PTZ Cameras for Church — or Camcorders?
When it comes to houses of worship and the cameras they use to film or live-stream their sermons and other events, nearly all of them at one time used basic camcorders. Although these are excellent cameras, more and more of these organizations are switching to PTZ cameras for church (pan/tilt/zoom cameras) instead. Known as PTZ cameras, they have a lot of the same advantages as camcorders but offer perks those cameras just don’t have.

A new trail system will soon be available to the public, thanks to the efforts of members of St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in Chelsea. Churches can form connections with their communities with projects like this one. Involving other members of community in a project is one way to build relationships with these members of the community. .

UMC conference with lesbian bishop approves disaffiliation votes of 38 congregations
A Colorado-based conference of the United Methodist Church led by a bishop in a same-sex marriage has approved the disaffiliation votes of 38 congregations leaving the denomination amid a schism over the denomination's stance on homosexuality.
This article and the next one reports on how two United Methodist Church annual conferences have reacted differently to churches seeking to dissafilate themselves from the deomination. One of the more progressive of the UMC anual conferences voted to allow the dissafiliationof 38 congregations, permitting these congregations to take church buildings and other property with them. Progressive Methodists realize that the more conservative clergy and congregations disaffiliate from the UMC, the less the opposition there will be to the changes they desire to make in the denomination. On the other and, the second annual conference appears to be motivated by a desire to hang o to what it sees as valuable church buildings and other property.

Need Encouragement? 6 Invisible Things Church Leaders are Doing Really Well Right Now
...in the hopes of encouraging you and your team, here are some rather invisible things you’re doing really well right now as you’re leading.

Creating Church Experiences Worth Experiencing
Welcome to the Experience Economy. Actually, we’ve been living in it for a decade or two, even if you and I haven’t realized it. Most of us are old enough to remember the previous service economy. The economic progression away from the service economy has been evolving for quite some time and has real implications for your church. Let’s chat for a minute about this economic progression to better understand how it affects our churches.

With Friendship in Decline, Belonging Is a Powerful Apologetic
“How to Help Our Neighbors Meet Jesus” is a series that asks notable thinkers and theologians to answer this question: “What is the most important thing the church must do right now to help our neighbors trust Jesus for their salvation?”

Gospel-Patterned Friendship
...what begins as easy and natural as kids somehow becomes murky and difficult with age. Sure, we have acquaintances all around us. Coworkers and neighbors, even fellow church members, with whom we exchange pleasantries, inquire about the other’s kids, and talk about our vacation plans. But a true friendship—a relationship that goes deeper than any of that and takes on the form of true life-sharing—that’s rare. It’s also difficult.

25 Outstanding Discipleship Resources
Every pastor (and every church) benefits from access to excellent discipleship resources. We’ve gathered some vintage discipleship resources that may not turn up on the first page of a Google search. Perhaps this collection of 25 discipleship resources could become your reading/viewing list for the next few months?

Anglican Attendance Strongly Rebounds
Anglican congregations in the United States, Canada and Mexico are reporting a significant attendance increase of 17,228 persons following a widespread return to regular worship services post-COVID. The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) is also reporting modest growth in both membership and total number of churches in 2022.
What I have noticed is that this rebound is occurring primarily in regions in which church attendance is still valued by a large segment of the population and where the many Methodist churches have disaffiliated from the United Methodist Church over fears of that denomination taking a more permissive stance on same sex marriage and the ordination of sexual active members of the LGBT+ segment of the population. These factors to my mind call for a careful analysis of who comprises this rebound.

Church attendance has its limitations as a statistical measure. It does not show whether a particular individual counted is a full-fledged disciple of Jesus Christ but only that they go to church. It does not measure the impact that a church has on its community nor the size of the church's foot print in the community. A church can have a large attendance but produce few disciples who are capable of replicating themselves and making more disciples.
One consequently cannot assume because a church has a lot of warm bodies in its pews that that it is effectively making disciples and those warm bodies are full-fledged disciples of Jesus Christ.

Friday's Catch: 'Small-Town Pastor, Look at Christ’s Heart' And More

If we hope to lead like Jesus, we must learn to love like him.

Praise for the 'bog standard' church leader: why average and unfashionable can be good for ministry
The bog standard vicar was celebrated in the 2010-2014 BBC TV series 'Rev', with Tom Hollander playing a very average Anglican vicar in an inner-city parish. He was portrayed as a man full of doubt and moral indecision, his prayer life apparently mostly taking place while on the toilet, his congregation very eclectic and very small.

Can churches spread the gospel of solar in coal country?
Nationally, churches install an outsized share of the solar market — houses of worship host a solar array at three times the rate of other non-residential buildings, according to a report by the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Across the country, nearly 2 percent of congregational buildings have installed a solar energy system. But in the region where coal has permeated identity for over a century, churches are slower to buy in.

A Complementarian Case for Women as Pastors
The evangelical world has been abuzz over whether or not it is biblical for a woman to be called a pastor. This came to a head once again at the recent annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Anaheim, California...It’s important that we spend some time looking at how the NT actually makes use of the noun “pastor” or “shepherd” and the verb “to pastor.” You may be surprised by what you see.

The Top Ten Next Steps for New Church Members
Congratulations! You joined a church. Now what? While every church has a different procedure for church membership, there are some simple things you can do to honor God in your decision. These items apply to everyone.
Sam Rainer has put together a helpful list for new church members but he does neglect to mention one thing. Going to church is not the same as becoming a disciple of Jesus. Neither is joining a church. Doing what Rainer urges new church members to do is certainly a part of a life of discipleship as is going to church and joining a church. A disciple of Jesus also patterns their life on the teaching and example of Jesus and with the help of God's grace follows Jesus' teaching and example in every area of their life.
Should You Even Bother Worrying About Church Growth?
...we are only one generation away from complete extinction. With that in mind, we all need to worry about church growth.

Soft Complementarians: Holding to Headship and the Gifting of Women
The place of women serving, leading, and teaching in the Church is frequently a topic of discussion, seemingly heightened in 2023 as Christian denominations such as Christian and Missionary Alliance (CMA) and the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) have made national news over their discussions and decisions regarding the role of women in a local church. The CMA has adopted a “soft complementarian” position where women can be given the title of “pastor,” and the SBC has voted to disfellowship two churches for women serving in pastoral roles.
This article and the next article offer different perspectives of women as pastors.
"Pastor" is derived from the Latin noun pastor which means "shepherd" and is derived from the verb pascere – "to lead to pasture, set to grazing, cause to eat." Both in ancient and medieval times and even today in some parts of the world, both men and women tend flocks of sheep. It is not exclusively a male profession. Lesbia Scott's hymn, I Sing a Song of the Saints of God," contains a reference to "the shepherdess on the green."

Gen Z, Let’s Love Our Neighbors
Following Jesus’s command to love our neighbor can be challenging for all of us, but Gen Z may struggle in different ways than other generations. One simple reason is that we don’t know our neighbors. We can order anything we need from Amazon instead of asking the family next door.

‘God Is Greater Than the Southern Baptist Convention,’ Says Pastor Whose Church Was Ousted
After the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) disfellowshipped her Kentucky church for having a female pastor, Linda Barnes Popham has been doubling down on her disagreement with the denomination’s interpretation of Scripture.
The point has been made that the word, "pastor" appears only once in Scripture and in a passage that makes no mention of gender. This is the passage: "Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ." (Ephesians 4:11-12, NLT) It is noteworthy that this passage refers to Christ's gifts to the local church, not to officers of the local church like elders and deacons.
An SBC Pastor Responds to the Decision on Women in Ministry
Bob Bender, a long time Southern Baptist pastor in Oklahoma and Colorado spoke on the floor of the Southern Baptist Convention and said to the roughly 12,000 messengers, “What does it say when we’re slow on the take on sexual abuse of women but quick on the draw to disqualify them from non-lead pastor roles?”

Can you be biblically conservative and have women as pastors in the church you pastor or are a part of leading?

3 Traits of Great Pastors
The greatest pastors aren’t necessarily the ones leading the largest churches or getting featured at the leadership conferences or in Christian publications. They may or may not be great preachers or revolutionary organizational leaders. More often than not, they are actually quite unassuming. But they possess traits that only characterize people who have spent a lot of time with Jesus.

Technology and Its Place in Your Facility

It is noteworthy that the Gospels tell us that Jesus, while he affirmed the authority of the Old Testament, also considered his own words, including his interpretation of the Old Testament, as authoritative for his disciples. "So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?"(Luke 6:46 NLT).

How often do you and your leadership team have discussions about connecting and communicating? By no means are we proposing that we shift away from clear biblical teaching on important truths such as our legal guilt before God. We are merely saying that shifting intuitions may require new starting places in evangelistic conversations and discipleship relationships. Here are six shifts we believe are critical to meaningfully engage the next generation.

Saddleback’s SBC Removal Upheld; Rick Warren Believes He Sinned by Not Allowing Women To Be Pastors
“They are arguing over a word that isn’t even in the New Testament English Bible,” Warren said of the SBC. ”The single word, the English word, pastor—singular—you can’t find it in any English translation of the New Testament. It’s not there. You can only find the plural word, one time.” Warren referred to Ephesians 4:11, where he says the use of the word can be found.

Thursday Evenings at All Hallows (Thursday, June 15, 2023) Is Now Online

Welcome to Thursday Evenings at All Hallows. A disciple of Jesus may be defined as a person who believes in Jesus and his teachings and who seeks to live according to Jesus' teachings. Disciples then are basically students, learning from the one they call teacher and putting into practice what they learn. Beginning this Thursday evening and for the next several Thursday evenings we will be examining what Jesus taught and what his teachings means for us as his followers and would-be followers in the twenty-first century. Jesus taught not only by word but also by example. We will be looking at both his words and his example.

Tuesday's Catch: 'How to Lose A First-Time Guest in 10 Minutes or Less' And More

How to Lose A First-Time Guest in 10 Minutes or Less
It’s hard to believe, but according to people who study these things, first-time guests to your church make up their minds whether they’re coming back or not in the first ten minutes of their visit. Think about that.

When Churches Want a Pastor Who Can “Bring In Young Families” . . .

How to Overcome Obstacles to Prayer
According to an early historical document called the Didaché, the first-century Christians maintained regular prayer meetings three times per day (third, sixth, and ninth hour). But a century later, the Christians held their prayer meetings only twice per day-Sunrise and sunset. It seems like the passion for prayer started slowly decaying, even up to this present day where statistics say that 20% of church members never pray and the vast majority only do so occasionally.
