[Religious Intelligence] 12 Aug 2008--Church leaders have united to call for peace in the conflict between Georgia and Russia, as Moscow showed no sign of recognising the cease-fire called by Tblisi.

Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday urged an “immediate” end to hostilities in South Ossetia and the initiation of negotiations between Russia and Georgia over the disputed province.

The Pontiff called for peace in the name of Christian roots shared by the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Christians. A large majority of Georgians and Russians are Orthodox.

Meanwhile, the Church of England’s spokesman on Georgian affairs, the Bishop of Wakefield, has issued a statement calling for a peace. The Rt Rev Stephen Platten outlined the Church’s effort to keep the “very strong links with the Christian churches in the region.”
