When is enough enough?

[Anglican Mainstream] 22 Sep 2007--Last week I heard a fascinating programme on Radio 4 which described how the gay agenda had managed to make such remarkable progress in terms of British culture over the past two or so decades. One of the prime vehicles has been the media, and in particular, the gay figure in ’soaps’ and other programmes, as well as iconic gay individuals who have blazed the trail to acceptance, popularity, status and wealth. In its various modes the media has had massive influence in conditioning people’s responses by altering their perceptions of both reality and morality. Their opinions and beliefs have followed their responses and society in turn has been radicalized.

The formula was simple. Gay was a given and exposure to it was modest to begin with. However, it then became increasingly dominant, more sexually explicit and in one’s face. Those implementing these changes wondered when people would complain that ‘enough is enough’. They need not have worried. The passivity of the collective was mind-boggling. Given this relative openness, more gay folk felt free to come out. ‘The sky has not fallen’ (a la Chicken Little) so what is the problem? A subtle cultural shift from defensive to offensive then occured, and legislation has now kicked in to defend and promote gay rights. An entire sea change is occurring. And most Christians and other social conservatives pretend it is not happening. Ignoring this aspect of the culture wars might just make it go away.
