Outreach Ideas: Host a Community Garden
Willie Mae Walker, 72, of Murfreesboro, N.C., wanted squash last summer. “But in the stores,” she says, “they’re high. You can’t afford them.” So when a friend told her about Allen Chapel AME Church’s community garden in Jackson, N.C., she contacted the Rev. Christopher Haywood, who presented her with a free bag of vegetables.
