Evangelicals and the Allure of Power: Anticipating 2020


A glaring fault line among evangelicals has opened up over whether Christians should support Donald Trump. This divide is raising larger questions: How should evangelicals relate to political power? The Bible warns us against putting our trust in human leaders instead of God. For example, Psalm 146: 3-5 advises us, "Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God...." The Bible also tells us what happened to the people of Israel when they failed to heed this warning.
