All Hallows Evening Prayer for Wednesday Evening (May 5, 2021) Is Now Online

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

I have friends who dismiss Christianity as a “set of rules.” They talk about living the life of a free spirit, unfettered by rules, loving all living creatures, and doing no harm to anything. But when you get to know them, you realize that they are living their own lives by a set of rules. Some rules they made up; others they borrowed. They do not recognize the rules they are living by as rules, but they are rules.

Seeing Christianity as a set of rules is also an oversimplification of the Christian faith and way of life. Regrettably, our use of such terms as the Great Commandment and the Golden Rule may give that impression.

We all have blind spots and I understand from where my friends are coming. As Christians we can get stuck on what we ourselves see as rules and neglect to show toward others the grace which our Lord himself shows toward us and calls us to show toward them.

The Scripture reading for this Wednesday evening is Matthew 7:1-29 Teachings from the Sermon on the Mountain.

The homily is titled “Not a Rule, a Way to Love.”
