All Hallows Evening Prayer for Sunday Evening (December 12, 2021) Is Now Online

All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.

In the Gospels both John the Baptist and Jesus draw on imagery people living in the agrarian society of the time would have immediately recognized. Unless you have lived on a farm in the United States or Canada, and are familiar with the older methods of agriculture, this imagery may not register with you. It will not leave an impression with you. Today wheat threshed by machines in the very field in which it is own grown and the threshed grain is loaded directly onto a waiting truck.

To those who came to hear John, the image of the Christ, God’s Anointed, armed with a flail to beat the wheat to separate the kernels from the chaff would have been a very strong one.

In ancient Egypt where the people of Israel were enslaved, the shepherd’s crook and the flail were symbols of royalty. Statues depicted pharaoh carrying both symbols.

The Scripture reading for this Sunday is Luke 3: 7-17 John Heralds the Coming of Christ.

The homily is titled “Wheat and Chaff.”
