Sundays at All Hallows (Sunday, August 13, 2023) Is Now Online
Welcome to Sundays at All Hallows.
The Saturday evening news is filled with bad news. Two mass stabbing In South Korea two weeks apart. Wildfires raging out of control on the island of Maui. 80% of the town of Lahaina destroyed. 89 people killed. Hundreds unaccounted for. At least two churches, one Episcopal and the other United Methodist, gone up in flames. A Buddhist temple also burned to the ground. A three-year-old Venezuelan girl collapsed and died on a bus the Republican governor of Texas uses to ship migrants to out of state cities with Democratic administrations. A surge of deaths of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in small, overcrowded boats in stormy weather.
In the midst of all this bad news, Christians are called not only to be the hands and feet of Jesus but also to tell others about Jesus. We are called to be the bearers of Good News.

Social Media Is a Spiritual Distortion Zone

From a public health perspective there is a difference between a retail store where customers do not stay for any length of time and a sanctuary or worship center which may e poorly ventilated and where the same people may stay together for a hour or more and engage in activities which have bee shown to contribute to the spread of an infectious virus. While meeting a congregation's spiritual needs may be a concern for pastors and other religious leaders, preventing the spread of a dangerous communicable disease is going to be given greater priority by public health authorities. Will the Supreme Court take up the denial of religious exemptions for unvaccinated schoolchildren?
A teaching of Jesus which was glozed over or ignored in this controversy is that our Lord repeatedly emphasized that God did not desire sacrificial offerings from us whatever form such offerings might take but that we show mercy to our fellow human beings.
A Connecticut case makes it likely.
We are already seeing a resurgence of dangerous childhood diseases due to lax attitudes toward vaccination and the spread of inaccurate information and intentional disinformation about vaccination and vaccines. A Supreme Court decision overturning public health measures requiring the mandatory vaccination of children could make the situation far worse than it already is.

Friday's Catch: ''United Methodist pastors feel worse and worry more than a decade ago'And More
Half have trouble sleeping, a third feel depressed and isolated, half are obese, and three-quarters are worried about money, according to a new study.
Study shows shift in disaffiliations
The Lewis Center for Church Studies has done a second study comparing U.S. congregations disaffiliating from The United Methodist Church with those staying. Disaffiliation numbers have grown rapidly in 2023, and the new study finds the pool of departing churches is less dominated by the Southeastern and South Central jurisdictions. Departing churches remain more likely to be majority white and led by a male pastor than churches remaining United Methodist.

Preach the Gospel at All Times
If there is one thing that unites people across many different faith traditions — a kind of ecumenical via negativa — it is an aversion to evangelism.
This aversion is particularly strong in the Episcopal Church but it is also quite evident in the churches which broke away from the Episcopal Church at various times in its history. It is widely seen in most North American churches, evangelical and mainline.5 Steps for Planning a Church Communications Timeline

3 Reasons Why Your Church Isn’t Engaging In Worship
On a scale of 1-10, how engaged is your church?
The Worship Team’s Guide to Transitions
We talk a lot about songs. We talk a lot about music. We talk a lot about worship. But an often neglected (but no less important) aspect of leading worship is how you approach transitions.
Transitions are important in liturgical worship as well as in so-called non-liturgical worship. I say so-called because services of public worship in supposedly non-liturgical churches do follow a predictable pattern from Sunday to Sunday with minor variations in that patter. This pattern is determined at the local level rather than prescribed at the denomination level as in liturgical churches. Factors that play a role in determining the pattern include local custom, the church leaders' understanding of the nature of worship and its place in the life of a church, and the influence of other churches.6 Ways Digital Technology Deforms Us

Shifting Our Mindset on Evangelism
We have to get underneath why people are not sharing the gospel. That frequently means facilitating a mental shift that can unleash their motivation and engagement. Mary T. Lederleitner believes that three areas are critical for making that change.
Hundreds of miles from the ruins of a long-vacant Arkansas church, destroyed this year by a tornado, another Episcopal congregation is rising – in a building that the Diocese of Arkansas purchased with some of the insurance money it received for the tornado-razed former church.
It is possible to plant and grow a new Episcopal church in a area which is experiencing a population boom and whose population is relatively diverse provided that the new church actively seeks to engage the community and connect with it. This observatio applies to Anglica Church in North America, Reformed Episcopal, Continuing Anglican, and United Methodist church plants.
The Lewis Center has issued an updated report on the characteristics of churches disaffiliating from the United Methodist Church that covers more than 6,100 churches approved for disaffiliation through June 2023. There continue to be more similarities than differences between the cohort of disaffiliating churches and the total pool of United Methodist churches. But disaffiliating churches are disproportionately in the Southeastern and South Central Jurisdictions, they are less likely to be served by an active elder, they are disproportionately white, and they are more likely to have a male lead pastor.
Nearly 70% of churchgoers have 'a growing sense of fear': Lifeway Research
More than two-thirds of Protestant pastors have reported that there is “a growing sense of fear” in their congregations regarding the future, according to a recent report by Lifeway Research.
I observe a lot of fearmongering occuring on social media such as Facebook and YouTube which suggests to me that social media ifluencers are stoking the fears of US Christians. I also observe a lot of catastrophizing and other forms of distorted thinking both in posts on social media and in responses to these posts. This, I believe, accounts at least in part for this pessimistic outlook. The negatvity bias, the tendency to pay pay more attention to negative information than positive information also accout at least in part for the same outlook.Americans worry that religious institutions are watering down, abandoning traditional beliefs: survey

Tuesday's Catch: '"Real Church"' And More
Michael Adam Beck, coauthor of Fresh Expressions of the Rural Church, explains how the faith communities formed using the Fresh expressions approach can connect with people that the conventional church cannot.
The formation of micro-churches meeting in non-traditional venues is a possible option for Anglicans and Methodists who for one reason or another are unable to attend a local church or have no local church to attend. When a Ministry Partnership Must End
Every seasoned pastor and organizational leader experiences significant conflicts and disagreements with fellow staff members, elders, or ministry colleagues. There are various reasons for such disputes: theological convictions, ministry strategies and priorities, leadership styles, communication gaps, perspectives about partnerships, and more. While many conflicts can be resolved to preserve and strengthen ministry partnerships, disagreements often prompt coworkers to part ways.
7 Steps to Agile Leadership
In this rapidly-changing world, churches have been forced to assess how we do ministry, and pastors must practice agile leadership.
Songs Are Discipleship
If a mist in the pulpit is a fog in the pew, the same is true of the songs we choose and sing congregationally. How does this song build up the body of Christ? How does this song edify a seasoned saint? How does this jingle build up the newly-born believer? How does this worship leader understand his role and responsibility? We must take seriously the theological development of the individuals we call worship leaders because they are disciples too.
How and When to Memorize Scripture
This article is adapted from Glenna Marshall's book, Memorizing Scripture, published by Moody Publisher.
Memorizing Scripture was a common practice in early monastic communities. There were no printed Bibles, much less digital ones, and what Bibles there were, were laboriously copied by hand. The early monks would memorize portions of Scripture so that when they were traveling together, they could recite a portion of Scripture for the benefit of those with whom they were traveling. Each monk would take turns in reciting a portion of Scripture.VOICES: How to be reconciled to God

Americans think more highly of their religious practice than those looking from afar see

According to data from Pew Research Center, 41% of U.S. adults describe faith as essential to them while only 23% of the rest of the world’s population views Americans that way. Respondents in the United States were almost twice as likely to make that claim about themselves than were their peers (at 21%) in other wealthy nations.

The Underground Church
Although we tried to get them involved, the new believers simply didn’t fit very well in the established churches in our community. It seemed clear that there was a need for new church structures that would effectively be home to converts from a variety of backgrounds. That’s why Jesus said we need to put new wine in new wineskins. “… Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved” (Matthew 9:16-17).

Whatever the church decides to do will determine the future of the church. Pastors may come and go, but those in the church will likely have to live with the answer for the remaining life of the church.
11 Tips for Cross-Cultural Church Planting
While we tend to associated cross-cultural church planting with planting a church in another country, it can involve planting a church in a community, district, or neighborhood whose dominant culture is different from our own. Te language spoke in that community, district, or neighborhood may also be different from ours. A number of the tips in this article can also be applied to church planting that is not cross-cultural.

Why America Is Not a Christian Nation
Michael Horton explains why there is no such thing, in the new covenant, as a “Christian nation” apart from the worldwide body of Christ. “The problem with Christian nationalism is not that some Christians are taking a biblical idea too seriously,” says Horton, professor of systematic theology and apologetics at Westminster Seminary California, “but that they are confusing America with Israel under the old covenant. From a biblical perspective, it’s actually heretical. It confuses the law with the gospel.”
Corporate Prayer Has Left the Church Building

While liturgical churches have in their Sunday gatherings what are called the Prayers of the People, the Universal Prayer, the Prayers of the Faithful, the Bidding Prayers, the Prayers of Intercession, or simply the Prayers, these prayers in a number of churches might be less perfunctory and more particularized. St. Brigid Oceanside
The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego is excited to announce plans for a new Episcopal community have taken root in the city of Oceanside, California. Under the leadership of the Rev. Brian Petersen, St. Brigid’s Episcopal Church will be a beacon of hope and transformation for the community of Oceanside.
From what I have observed church planting in The Episcopal Church appears to occur in 20 to 30 year intervals rather than on a ongoing basis. In my former diocese a number of new churches were planted in the 1950s and in the 1980s and in the early years of the first decade of the century. In the Diocese of Kentucky in which I now live two new churches were planted in the 1950s and one new church in the 1980s in my part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. No new Episcopal churches were planted in this region in the first decade of the twenty-first century. However, three breakaway churches were planted. Only one of these churches survives.
To grow, churches must not only replace members and attendees who die, become homebound or institutionalized, move away, migrate to another church, or drop out altogether, but also they must add new members and attendees. The same holds true for denominations. As well as replacing churches that close, disaffiliate, or break away, they must also plant new churches. Otherwise, they will become increasingly less viable.

No, Slavery Didn't Benefit the Slaves: Dismantling the myth that ancient slavery ‘wasn’t that bad’
Chance Bonar identifies and explains three myths that stand in the way of understanding ancient slavery and how systems of enslavement have evolved over time.
Anyone who has studied the archeological record and ancient literature knows that slaves in the ancient Mediterranean world and elsewhere did not have an easy life. They were their master's property to do with whatever their master pleased. They were often war captives or the children of slaves. Those who were war captives would have suffered from the trauma of having seen family members and loved ones killed in front of their eyes and might have been raped themselves. They were physically and sexually abused and otherwise ill-treated; slept in crowded, cramped quarters; worked hard for long hours; and poorly fed. Those who romanticize their lot need to be transported back in time and enslaved themselves. They will be quickly disabused of their romantic notions!Farming is ministry: 5 ways your congregation can start today

Thursday's Catch: 'Welcoming Visitor without Scaring Them Away' And More
Joseph Yoo offers some good advice in this article on the ways that a church can scare away first time guests.
In two of the new church plants I helped to pioneer, we handed out contact cards and complementary pens with the worship bulletins. The pens had the name of the church and its logo printed on them. During the Sunday gathering guests were invited to complete a contact card if they wanted to fill one out and to include any prayer requests. There was space on the card for prayer requests. They were told they could turn in the card when the offering was taken or at the end of the service. They were not pressured into filling out a card. It was presented to them simply as an option as was submitting a prayer request. Most guests turned in a card. In one of the church plants we also had a welcome kiosk where first-time guests could pick up a brochure about the church and a complementary coffee mug with the church's name and logo on it. We also gave away T-shirts with the church's name and logo on them.Comfort and Challenge – A Ministry Balancing Act
Church growth is a complex and multifaceted process, but at its core, it involves creating a skillful balance of comfort and challenge. The art of church growth lies in the ability to present the comforting love of Jesus Christ while simultaneously challenging congregation members to grow in their faith, as well as their commitment to the engagements of the church.
Many, if not most, churches have far too many activities and full calendars. Thom looks at how to lead these churches to do less to be more effective.
Safeguarding Your Church
Here is a quick reminder of the policies and procedures every church should have on file.
How Pastors Can Preach Effectively in Light of the Dechurching Movement
In this episode of As in Heaven, Jim Davis and Michael Aitcheson welcome Sam Allberry and Michael Keller to discuss preaching in light of the dechurched phenomenon. The guests share insights from their own preaching preparation, cultural insights from their contexts, and how they question cultural assumptions.
Don’t Just Pray — Become a PRAYING Church
Most churches pray, but not all are praying churches. Most churches pause during their gatherings to pray, sometimes out of ritual, but certainly out of sincerity. But how does a church make the leap to become a praying church, where prayer is the engine and fuel behind every spiritual advancement?
What’s the Point of Re-Reading Familiar Bible Stories?
Certain Bible stories stand etched in our minds, whether it’s the tale of the slingshot-wielding David or the animals marching two by two. These narratives permeate our world so much so that even many non-Christians can recite the key points from memory.
Intergenerational Worship is NOT...
Lenses of tradition, personal preference, and familiarity often cloud the conversation when we talk about any kind of change at church, but especially when we talk about bringing together generations for times of worship in a corporate worship setting. It may be helpful that begin by explaining what this time of worship is NOT so that it can set the stage for what it is intended to be.
Five Ways Intergenerational Relationships Can Transform Community
Within the context of a church or faith community, age-specific opportunities like Sunday school and youth group are the “norm”. However, if communities lack the space and opportunity for generations to connect, develop meaningful relationships, and engage in intentional discipleship, we miss out on some incredible ways to grow with God and one another. It is essential to recognize the tremendous benefits that intergenerational connections can bring to the spiritual growth and overall vibrancy of the community.
“Thank You for Coming. Please Leave.”
This article reminds me of what happened to my older brother and his wife when they took their three daughters to a local church with them, having decided that it was time for them to start attend church again after a long absence as they now had children. Unfortunately they picked the wrong church to visit. The longtime members made it evident to them that they and their children were not welcome at that church. A year or so after that the church closed its doors. Too many visitors had gotten the message that they were not welcome at that church.
Is It Time To Re-Think The Role Of “Communications Director” at Your Church?
If there’s been a remotely positive outcome of the virus, it’s been that church leaders are finally realizing that their online congregation matters, and communicating and connecting with that congregation is more important than ever.
In one of our most recent podcasts, we had the opportunity to chat with social media expert Jacob Shipley, who offered us a wealth of knowledge regarding how ministries can best build and boost their social media strategies while maintaining a heart of worship that is people focused. Here is what we learned....

Thursday Evenings at All Hallows (Thursday, August 3, 2023) Is Now Online
Welcome to Thursday Evenings at All Hallows. To a believer, Jesus is not only Savior, Teacher, Companion, and Friend but most importantly of all Jesus is Lord. And as Lord, his teaching carries far greater weight with the believer than the teaching of the wisest and most learned sage. At the same time the knowledge and wisdom that the human race has acquired over the centuries can prove helpful in understanding what Jesus taught. We cannot dismiss that it was God’s grace working in the human race that enabled the human race to garner this knowledge and wisdom.

All the church had to do in the past was turn on the lights and unlock the doors, and people would come. That season in the church’s life has shifted, but many churches have not changed with the times.
