Successful Ministry


The last words of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel are a source of comfort and strength to many of us. Jesus promises, “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Given the general use of “disciple” in Matthew, and the all-embracing time period, this promise is to us, not just to the apostles back then.

But what is involved in Jesus being with us? Is it an assurance of the presence of Jesus to comfort and strengthen us in times of trouble? Is Jesus promising that we will feel or see his presence, maybe by answers to prayer or miracles? I think that Jesus is talking about something much more specific, and much more significant.
