[Church of England Newspaper] January 20, 2005--Yes, another plenary indulgence has just been announced in Rome for those practicising devotions to the reserved sacrament – whether ARCIC takes in such Baroque developments is questionable, but Roma dixit to her faithful. Robin Gill, on the other hand, dixit to the Anglican faithful on the case for euthanasia, appropriately enough through the infallible pages of the Observer. Canon Gill last came to fame in Anglicanism when he wrote the controversial preparatory paper for the Lambeth Conference, 1998, on homosexuality, a paper saying that there were several views all of equal validity, basically a relativist menu which did not find favour with the Lambeth bishops. He now chairs the Archbishop’s medical ethics committee, and the bishops deputed him to speak to the Parlialmentary body looking into euthanasia. He said that there was a strong case for it in some circumstances in his own personal view, but that the church was not altering its position, happily. Yet again the faithful are made to feel that change is afoot and they wait for the next crisis to be initiated by their bureaucratic elite.
