[The Globe and Mail] January 8, 2005--The earthquake shocks struck Lisbon at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, 1755, with a force calculated by seismologists to be at a magnitude of 8.5. The tsunami hit half an hour later. An estimated 60,000 people died.
