[Anglican Mainstream] May 4, 2006--Canada’s Anglican bishops unanimously endorsed a motion expressing “grave concern” about proposed legislation in Nigeria that “would prohibit or severely restrict the freedom of speech, association, expression and assembly of gay and lesbian persons.” Their motion also called criticized the (Anglican) Church of Nigeria for its support of the legislation.
Editorial comment: Same sex marriage is not a human right. It has never been part of a classical understanding of what human rights are to assert that it is. The Nigerian church is party to the resolutions of Lambeth. Its actions must be read in the light of their commitment to Lambeth. It is incumbent on the church in Nigeria to be engaged with the discussion of the passage of the law in Nigeria. In their Islamic context there is of course the possibility that the law could be fuelled by intolerance rather than informed by Christian charity. The Church of Nigeria needs to be deeply involved in the debate, and taken seriously, in order to bring the concerns of Christian charity to bear on what could be most draconian. They need to be supported and encouraged as they engage vigorously in the debate, in which they will engage in the light of the Anglican Communion’s public stand as set out in Lambeth 1.10. The intent of the Archbishop of Nigeria has been to affirm traditional marriage and deny the validity of so-called same sex marriage. Anglican Mainstream
