[The Birmingham News] 15 May 2007--Former Cathedral Church of the Advent Dean Paul Zahl will step down July 31 as president and dean of Trinity Episcopal School of Ministry, a position that he left Birmingham to take three years ago.
Efforts to reach Zahl for comment were unsuccessful.
"He's greatly loved by the board and he'll be greatly missed by the school," the Rev. David Roseberry, chairman of the school's board of trustees, said by phone Saturday. "He felt his work at the seminary had been completed."
Roseberry said he expects Zahl to focus on writing and promoting books he's written, including "2,000 Years of Amazing Grace." Zahl has done more than 80 radio interviews related to that book, and has a new one out called "Grace in Practice."
Zahl issued a statement saying that he plans to pursue other ministry with his wife, Mary.
"Mary and I wish to move forward toward new opportunities for our years ahead in ministry, proclaiming and teaching God's love and grace as broadly as possible," Zahl said. "I love the school and I wish only the best of God's blessing for it in the years ahead."
Roseberry said there was no controversy surrounding Zahl's departure.
"I think his gifts are teaching, preaching and expounding," he said. "The administrative work of a seminary - budgeting and forecasting - is really stifling for him."
