[California Catholic Daily] 17 Jan 2008--On Nov. 10, the U.S. Episcopal Church’s first female presiding bishop ordained California’s first woman bishop. In a service at St. Andrew’s Episcopal church in Saratoga, Episcopal Bishop Katharine Jefferts-Shori witnessed the vows of Mary Gray-Reeves, following which Anglican bishops from around the world laid hands on her. Gray-Reeves now presides over the Episcopal diocese of El Camino Real, which includes the Silicon Valley and the Central Coast.

The ordination service was a multi-cultural affair, according to San Jose Mercury News. It featured a Sudanese choir, prayers spoken in both English and Spanish, and one Sherry LeBeau, “smudg[ing] the church with sage as her husband spoke in Lakota.”
