Bill to Permit Female Bishops Fails in Wales

[The Living Church] 3 Apr 2008--The General Synod of the Anglican Church in Wales narrowly defeated a bill which would have permitted female priests to be ordained bishops.

The bill received a majority in all three orders, but fell three votes short of the canonically required two-thirds needed for approval in the clergy order. The bill was approved 52-19 in the lay order, 5-0 in the the House of Bishops, and 27-18 by clergy.

The Most Rev. Barry Morgan, Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Llandaff, lobbied hard for the bill’s passage. In an opinion piece published today in the Guardian newspaper, Archbishop Morgan wrote that he would not support any amendment to the bill which would permit a male bishop with jurisdiction for those priests and congregations who do not believe God has called women to ordained orders.
