[allAfrica.com] 15 Jul 2008--Amid the hype of an imminent Anglican schism, Kenya's Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi has spoken to assure some four million members in the country of the resolve by bishops from the South to reform the besieged church from within.
Fears of a split became widespread following the meeting in Jerusalem on June 23-29 of 300 bishops brought together by the crisis of the consecration in 2003 of openly gay priest Gene Robinson as the bishop of Hampshire.
Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria, who read the opening speech of the Global Anglican Future Conference (Gafcon) in Jerusalem, set the agenda of what was initially feared to herald a break-up of the church with 80 million members worldwide, by making it clear that they were not breaking away from the Anglican Communion.
