[OneNewsNow] 22 Sep 2008--Failed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac certainly succeeded at winning friends and influencing lawmakers on Capitol Hill before the federal government stepped in to bail out the two firms. One of the companies has had especially close ties to Barack Obama.
According to the Federal Election Commission, the Democratic presidential nominee is the third largest recipient of campaign cash from Fannie and Freddie, pulling in $123,000 from the companies since he ran for the Senate in 2004. Senator Obama (D-Illinois) has a tight connection to Fannie Mae, in particular. Former Fannie CEO Jim Johnson, who now lives on the top floor of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC, was tapped by Obama to vet his potential vice-presidential running mates.
