[LifeSiteNews] 19 Sep 2008--The hacker who claimed responsibility for breaking into the private email account of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin today boasted to eager news outlets that it had been "easy" to impersonate her online to obtain her password. Some news outlets and weblogs are now running Palin's personal photos and emails, downloaded from the hacked e-mail account.
"Anonymous", an online group of hackers, claimed responsibility and posted copies of two emails, a contact list and family photos to Wikileaks, a website that specializes in anonymously hosting leaked documents.
The Republican campaign called the hack a "shocking invasion of the governor's privacy and a violation of law." If the hack was an attempt to find something with which to discredit Palin, it apparently failed, with none of the e-mails containing any incriminating information.
"The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these e-mails will destroy them," said McCain-Palin 2008 Campaign Manager Rick Davis. Two of Mrs. Palin's personal email accounts have now been deleted.
