All Hallows Evening Prayer is a service of worship in the evening for all pilgrims on the journey to the heavenly city.
In the first century Mediterranean world bread was the staple of the people’s diet. The fee for the services of a common prostitute who often was a poor woman who had no other means of supporting herself than sell her body was the price of a loaf of bread. In teaching his disciples how to pray, Jesus taught them to pray for their daily bread. When Jesus fed the five thousand, he fed them hard barley bread with salty dried fish as a condiment. It is not surprising that Jesus would compare himself with what for the people of Galilee, Judaea, and Jerusalem was the staff of life—an indispensable part of their diet.
The reading appointed for this Sunday evening’ service is John 6: 35, 41-51 The Bread of Life .
The homily is titled, “Jesus the Living Bread.”
