Anglicans to vote on gay marriage

[cnews.canoe.ca] 21 June 2007--- Discussion is growing as Anglican delegates gathered in Winnipeg prepare to vote on the issue of gay marriage.

If a series of resolutions pass Saturday, individual dioceses may opt to bless same-sex unions.

"The motion is in a sense a kind of basic structure that says same-sex union is OK according to our beliefs and doctrine, theology," said Rupertsland Bishop Donald Phillips. "My mind is not entirely made up."

He noted the issue is a hot topic at the 38th General Synod of the Anglican of Church of Canada, being held at the Marlborough Hotel in downtown Winnipeg, but acknowledged there is concern it could divide Anglicans here and abroad.

Church officials in Africa, South America and other areas don't support same-sex unions, and a yes vote in Canada could potentially see the Canadian Church left out of a global community.
