[Episcopal Life Online] 9 Oct 2007--Eleven of the 12 members of the Council of African Anglican Provinces, meeting October 2-5 in Quatre Bornes, Mauritius, have said that they believe they have "come of age."
Meanwhile, the Primates of the provinces attending the Mauritius meeting issued a communiqué (text below) calling for a postponement of the 2008 Lambeth Conference to "allow the current tensions to subside and leave room for the hard work of reconciliation that must be done."
Instead, the Primates, called for a special meeting of the all the Communion's Primates to finalize the proposed Anglican covenant and set a timetable for ratification by individual provinces. They said that the proposed covenant is "the one way for us to uphold our common heritage of faith while at the same time holding each one of us accountable to those teachings that have defined our life together and also guide us into the future,"
The special Primates' meeting would also "review the actual response made by The Episcopal Church -- both their words and their actions."
The Primates were referring to the report of the Joint Standing Committee (JSC) of the Primates and the Anglican Consultative Council, which the CAPA Primates found "unsatisfactory."
