Does Islamic Law Have A Place In The U.K.?

[CBS News] 16 Feb 2008--The Archbishop of Canterbury sure kicked up a storm when he suggested Islamic Shariah law has a place in British society. His words upset a lot of people, including the Queen, politicians, the media and even some Muslims - one of whom said, "It is not Muslims calling for this, it's a Christian. But once again we are being demonized."

Dr. Rowan Williams is the Church of England's spiritual leader. Some contend he has enough problems among his own flock - a row over gay clergy and other issues that threaten to split his church - without stirring up more controversy about someone else's religion.

Shariah law is the dominant legal force in some Muslim countries, though others have both secular and religious courts. It regulates much of day-to-day Muslim life: economics, banking, legal contracts and family and social issues.
