At the time of the English Reformation the Reformers whitewashed the interior of churches and removed the statues and reliquaries. They decorated churches with wooden boards on which were painted the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and other passages of Scripture. It was not until the so-called Catholic Revival of the nineteenth century that what the Reformers had rejected as idolatrous on Biblical grounds was reintroduced into a number of English and American churches. Decorating Anglican churches with Scripture would be a return to its Biblical and Reformation heritage.
