Reactions to shooting at Muhammad carton contest reveals divide over Islam in United States

I am posting links to a number of articles related to the Texas attack. These articles show that Americans are divided over Islam. Liberals are displaying their characteristic penchant for political correctness. They show a strong distaste for what they perceive as extreme views in others (but are quite oblivious to extreme views in themselves). They have appointed themselves as defenders of American Muslims against what they perceive to “Islamophobia,” or anti-Muslim bias. They see people like Pamela Geller and Geert Wilders as motivated by deep-seated prejudice and irrational fear, blowing the threat from militant Islamists out of proportion ,and engaging in hate-mongering against Muslims. Their attitude toward such people and indeed toward anyone who publicly expresses their concerns about Islam and its adherents is very close to the attitude that they have taken toward those who view homosexual practice as immoral on religious grounds. There is a real danger that free speech will be stifled in the debate over Islam and its relationship to terrorism as has happened in the debate over homosexuality. Islam, its beliefs, and its practices, like other religions in the United States, should be the subject of open and free discussion. Christianity has been the subject of such discussion for decades—indeed for the entirety of US history. Islam should not be extended a special protected status that is not extended to other religions in the United States.
