[TimesOnline] March 5, 2005--In a curious distinction, the Archbishop of Canterbury is officially the Primate of all England, while the Archbishop of York serves as the Primate of England. The “all” must be all important because it is Canterbury and not York which is the most senior position in the Church of England. The post at York is, nevertheless, one of considerable importance to Anglicans. Dr David Hope has been a most admirable Archbishop of York and he will be a hard act to follow. His decision to engage in divinity downshifting by becoming a parish priest is typical of the man. His successor will require similar dignity and humility in what could be a very difficult period for the Church.
The article in its endorsement of the Bishop of London fails to mention that he has permitted the blessing of gay couples in his diocese as well as priests openly living with their gay partners. Both are contrary to the doctrine of the Church of England and its canons, not to say the teaching of the Bible.
