[icWales] 12 Apr 2007--The Archbishop of Wales will today issue a clarion call for women to be given a greater role in the church.

The Most Reverend Dr Barry Morgan will make the passionate address in support of women bishops to the Church in Wales's powerful governing body during its annual conference at the University of Wales, Swansea.

While women have been able to become priests in Wales since 1997, the Church in Wales has so far blocked their path to the higher office.

Despite most observers predicting a move towards women bishops at next year's April vote, there could be a risk of a major split in the church if dissenting voices are not placated.

Although there are some who oppose the views of the Archbishop, the move is looked upon far more favourably in Wales than across the border.
